Colorado Driving Permits
Introduction
Colorado offers three different options to get a valid driving permit based on your age level.
They are:
- Driver Education Permit
- Driver Awareness Permit
- Minor Instruction Permit
Driver Education Permit:
Requirements:
- Must be between 15 to 15 1/2 years old
- Must have completed a Drivers ED classroom course
or must have completed a behind the wheel driving course.
- Valid proof of identification (Birth Certificate, Passport)
- Parental consent and signature
However you may only drive with a parent, instruct, step parent, or adult who
signed affidavit of liability and guardianship.
Driver Awareness Permit
Requirements:
- Must be between 151/2 to 16 years of age
- Must provide proof of 4 hour Driver Awareness Program
- Parental Consent and signature
- Valid proof of identification
However, an individual may only drive with a parent, instructor, step parent or
adult who signed affidavit of liability and guardianship
Minor Instruction Permit
Requirements:
- Must be at least 16 years of age
- Valid Proof of Identification
- Must pass Written and Vision Test
- Parental consent and signature
However, an individual may only drive with a parent, instructor, step parent or
adult who signed an affidavit of liability and guardianship
Remember, the written test is difficult so study up.

Additional Information
- Permits expire after 3 years
- You must hold the permit for at least 1 year before applying for a
