Kentucky Driving Permits
Kentucky participates in the Graduated Licensing Program. As a result, it has three tiers for their driving program.
- Instruction Permit
- Provisional License
- Drivers License
Requirements for an instructional Permit
- Must be at least 16 years of age
- Valid Social Security Card
- Valid Birth Certificate
- Parental consent and signature if under the age of 18
- Pass both a vision and written test
- Show proof of residency
Restrictions
- Must drive with a licensed adult 21 years or older
- Cannot drive more than one passenger under the age of 20, unless they are immediate family members
- Cannot drive between Midnight and 6 AM
Requirements for a Provisional License
- Must have had a permit for at least 180 days
- Must pass a Road Skills Test
- Must have had 50 hours of Supervised driving (10 of which are at night)
Restrictions
- Cannot drive between midnight and 6 AM unless accompanied by a licensed adult 21 years or older
- Must take a Graduating License Course (4 hours) and present the certificate to the DDL
Requirements for a Drivers License
- Must be 18 years of age
- Pass vision, written, and Road skills test
- Valid Social Security Card
- Valid Birth Certificate
- Show proof of residency
Restrictions
- Regular License
