Massachussets Driving Permits

Obtaining a Driving License in Main requires participating in the Graduated Licensing Program.

Massachussets has three tiers and are shown below:

Massachussets Learning Permit

  • You must be at least 16  years old.
  • Appear in person at a driver's license examination station.
  • Must be enrolled in a Drivers ED program
  • Present a valid birth certificate or other acceptable identification.
  • Pass a written test
  • Pass a vision test
  • Have Parent Consent or Signature on application.
  • Pay the Required Fees
  • Present proof of enrollment in a certified Drivers ED Course

Restrictions

  • Must drive with a licensed adult 21 years or older

Requirements for an a Massachusetts Junior Operators License

  • You need to have held your Massachusetts learner's permit for at least six months.
  • You must have completed an approved driver's education program, with at least :
  • 30 hours of classroom instruction,
  • 12 hours of behind-the-wheel driver training,
  • Six hours of observation from the back seat of the training vehicle and
  • a parent or guardian must attend a two hour class on driver education.
  • You must complete 40 hours of driving (30 hours if you complete a driver skills development program) with your parent or guardian, who must certify the driving time on an RMV form.
  • You have held a learner's permit for at least six months.
  • You must have a clean driving record for the six months before you take the road test.
  • You must provide acceptable ID.
  • Pay the required fees

Restrictions

  • Cannot have more than one passenger under 18 years of age (Unless Immediate Family Members)
  • Cannot drive between Midnight and 5AM unsupervised unless for an emergency / work related situation

Requirements for a Full License

  • Must be at least 18 Years old
  • Pass a written test
  • Pass a Vision Test
  • Pass a road test
  • Have a parent sign a release form
  • Appear in person at  a drivers license examination Station
  • Present a valid birth certificate
  • Valid Social Security Number
  • Pay the required Fees
