Michigan Driving Permits
Obtaining a Michigan driving permit requires adherence to the Graduated Licensing Program.
As a result their are three tiers of licensing for the state of Michigan
Level I Requirements
- 14 years 9 months old
- Provide valid proof of citizenship
- Be both physically and mentally stable
- Pass a vision test
- Successfully complete Segment 1 of an approved driver education program and present a Segment 1 Certificate of Completion
- Have a parent, legal guardian, or responsible adult sign the Level 1 application.
Restrictions:
- Cannot drive without licensed adult or instructor.
Level II Requirements
- Be at least 16 years old
- Pass a vision test
- Have Level I permit for at least 6 months
- Be in good physical and mental health
- Pass a driving skills test
- Have a parent, legal guardian, or responsible adult sign the application to certify the 50 hours behind-the-wheel experience.
- No crashes or accidents while having Level I permit
Restrictions:
Cannot drive between midnight and 5 AM
Level III Requirements
- Be at least 17 years old
- Complete at least six months at Level 2
- Complete 12 consecutive months without a moving violation, an accident in which a moving violation resulted, an accident, a license suspension, or a violation of the graduated license restrictions (may be six months at Level 1 and six months at Level 2, if consecutive)
Restrictions:
Full license but is enrolled in Michigan's probationary period program for two years to all new drivers
