New York Driving Permits
Getting a Driving Permit in New York is a manageable task. One must be at least 16 years of age and have a parent sign for liability. However, if you are 17 and completed Drivers ED you may apply without parental consent
Requirements for a Drivers Permit
- Must be at least 16 years of age
- Valid Birth Certificate
- Valid Social Security Number
- Pass a vision Test
- Pass a Written Test
- Parental consent and Signature
Restrictions
- You can drive as long as you are accompanied by another driver who is at least 21 years old.
- You cannot drive with more than two other riders under the age of 21
unless they are immediate family. - The only passenger allowed in the front seat with you is the accompanying driver.
- You cannot drive between 9 p.m. And 5 a.m. In New York City's five boroughs and in Long Island's Nassau and Suffolk counties.
- If you take the road test within six months of receiving your learner's permit, you'll receive a limited junior license until the six months are up
Requirements for a Drivers License
- Must be at least 16 1/2 Years old
- Must have held a permit for at least 6 months
- Must have had at least 20 hours of supervised driving
- Must have completed a Drivers ED course and provide proof
- Valid Birth Certificate
- Valid Social Security Number
- Pass a vision test
- Pass a written test
- Pass a road skills test
- Parental consent and signature
Restrictions
You cannot drive between 12 AM and 5 AM without a licensed adult
supervising (Does not apply to 17 year olds)
