Texas Driving Permits

In order to get a drivers permit in Texas, one must be enrolled in a driver's training program, where you will  take a Behind the Wheel Training Course. Moreover, getting a drivers permit in Texas is relatively easy. However, Texas implements a Graduated License Program and offers three tiers of licensing:

  1. Instruction Permit      
  2. Provisional License
  3. A Full License

Requirements for an Instruction Permit

  • Must be at least 15 years of age
  • Provide valid Social Security Number
  • Obtain a driver education completion certificate.
  • Obtain Verification of Attendance and Enrollment in school (
  • If you own a vehicle, obtain proof it is registered in Texas and proof of liability insurance.
  • Parental Consent and Signature
  • Payment for the required fees
  • Valid Birth Certificate

Restrictions:

  • May only drive with a driving instructor and or adult 21 years or older

Requirements for a Provisional License

  • Turned 16
  • Held a valid Instruction Permit for at least 6 months
  • Provide valid Social Security Number
  • Have completed 32 hours of classroom instruction, seven hours of behind-the-wheel instruction, and seven hours of in-car practice.
  • Valid Birth Certificate
  • Pass a vision test
  • Pass a written test
  • Pass a road test
  • Valid proof of insurance of vehicle
  • Payment for the required fees

Restrictions

  • Cannot drive more than one passengers younger than 20 years of age without a licensed adult supervising.
  • Cannot drive between 12PM and 5 AM

Requirements for a Full License

  • Have to wait 6 months from issue date of a Provisional license
